What Is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that deposits tiny, follicle-sized points of pigment into the upper layer of the scalp to replicate the appearance of hair follicles. On a shaved head it reads as a clean, dense shadow of stubble; on thinning hair it reduces the contrast between scalp and hair so the hair looks fuller.
It adds no hair. It changes what the eye sees — and for most hair loss patterns, that is the entire problem.
How SMP is performed
An ultra-fine needle places carbon-based pigment at roughly 0.6 to 0.8 mm — the upper dermis. That is far shallower than a body tattoo, which is exactly why each impression stays the diameter of a follicle instead of blurring outwards over time.
Density is layered across multiple sessions spaced one to two weeks apart, so the artist can see how your skin healed the previous layer before adding more.
