SMP Pain Level: An Honest Explanation

Most clients rate scalp micropigmentation at three to four out of ten — described as a light electric tingling or a repetitive tapping rather than sharp pain. It is consistently reported as less painful than a body tattoo because the needle works at roughly 0.6–0.8 mm instead of 1.5–2 mm.
Sensation varies by zone, and that is worth knowing before your first session.
Zone by zone
- Temples and frontal hairline — the most sensitive area, thin skin over bone
- Mid-scalp — generally the most comfortable zone
- Crown — moderate; often the longest continuous working area
- Scar tissue — sensation is usually reduced, sometimes absent
- Back and sides — mild
What makes it easier
Sleep well the night before, eat a full meal beforehand, and avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours — both raise sensitivity and alcohol thins the blood. Sessions are broken into comfortable working blocks with breaks, and topical numbing is available on request.
Why we do not numb everything by default
Heavy topical anaesthetic can slightly change skin texture and fluid content, which affects how pigment sits. For sensitive zones it is a good trade; across the whole scalp it can compromise precision. Your artist will discuss it during your Los Angeles consultation and follow your preference.
Direct answers
Is SMP more painful than a tattoo?
No. The shallower depth makes it meaningfully less painful for almost everyone.
How long does the discomfort last afterwards?
A mild tenderness for 24–48 hours, similar to light sunburn. Nothing that stops normal activity.
Can I take painkillers before my session?
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen beforehand as they thin the blood. Paracetamol/acetaminophen is generally fine — confirm with your artist.
Can I try a small test area first?
Yes. Many LA clients start with a small discreet patch to experience the sensation and see how their skin heals.
