SMP Healing Process Explained: Day by Day

SMP healing takes about seven to ten days per session. You will see mild redness for 24–48 hours, dots that look slightly darker and sharper than the final result, light flaking between days four and seven, and a settled appearance by around day ten.
There is no downtime. Most clients return to work the next day.
Day by day
Days 0–2
Mild redness and warmth across the treated area, similar to light sunburn. Dots appear darker and more defined than they will be once healed. Keep the scalp dry and do not touch it.
Days 3–7
Redness fades. Light flaking begins — this is normal skin renewal and must not be picked or scratched. Some dots may look like they are lifting; they are not, the pigment sits below the flaking layer.
Days 8–14
Tone settles and typically lightens by 15–25 percent from day one. This is expected, which is why density is built across sessions rather than forced in one sitting.
Between sessions
Sessions are usually spaced one to two weeks apart so your artist can read the healed result and adjust saturation, spacing and shade before the next layer.
Aftercare rules that matter most
- No washing, sweating or steam for the first 3–4 days
- No sun exposure on the treated scalp for two weeks
- No picking or scratching during flaking
- No swimming pools or saunas for two weeks
- Resume light moisturiser and SPF only when your artist clears you
What is not normal
Increasing pain, spreading redness, swelling or discharge after day two are not part of normal healing and should be reported immediately. Our Los Angeles studio operates single-use, sealed needle cartridges and hospital-grade surface protocols specifically to keep that risk near zero.
Direct answers
Can I work out after SMP?
Wait three to four days. Sweat on healing skin can lift pigment and irritate the area.
Why does my SMP look darker right after the session?
Fresh pigment plus mild skin inflammation reads darker. It lightens noticeably by day ten.
Can I shave during healing?
Not for the first week. After that, clippers rather than a razor are preferred.
What if I have questions mid-heal?
VOID SMP clients in Los Angeles have direct access to their artist throughout the healing window.
