SMP for Women with Thinning Hair

Women do not need to shave for SMP. For female thinning, pigment is placed in the gaps between existing hairs so the scalp beneath stops showing through — at the part line, the temples, the crown, and along thinning edges.
The hair you have stays exactly as it is. What changes is the contrast behind it.
How density fill works for women
Female pattern loss is typically diffuse: the part widens, the crown thins, and scalp becomes visible under overhead light while the overall shape of the hair stays intact. Density SMP targets that show-through directly, placing shade between the hairs so the eye reads fullness rather than skin.
The pigment is diluted lighter than for a shaved-look treatment and matched to your root tone, so it disappears under your own hair.
- Part line widening — the most common request
- Temple thinning and traction alopecia at the edges
- Crown and vertex diffuse thinning
- Post-partum and post-menopausal thinning that has stabilised
- Alopecia patches within longer hair
What it does not do
It does not add hair, it does not change hair texture, and it will not help if the hair is so sparse that there is nothing to hide behind. Where density is extremely low, we say so during the consultation rather than proceeding.
Styling afterwards
You can wear your hair exactly as before, including tied back. Because the pigment follows your natural part, most clients find they can finally part their hair without the line drawing attention. Colour and heat styling resume once healing is complete.
Discretion
Female clients at our Los Angeles studio are treated privately, one client at a time, and we are happy to run the consultation virtually first if you would prefer to start that way.
Direct answers
Do I have to shave my head?
No. Density work is performed through and between your existing hair.
Will it show if I tie my hair up?
No — correctly matched pigment reads as shadow, which is exactly what dense hair roots look like.
Can I still colour my hair?
Yes, once healed. Colour treats the hair, not the scalp pigment.
How many sessions do women typically need?
Usually two to three. Book a complimentary consultation in Los Angeles for a plan specific to your density.
