Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare & Long-term Maintenance

Aftercare & Long-term Maintenance

The first seven days after each session determine how much pigment your skin keeps. Impressions are still settling, and heat, moisture, friction and UV are the four things that pull pigment back out before it stabilises.

Aftercare is not complicated. It is just non-negotiable.

Day 1 to day 7 — the healing timeline

Days 1–3: keep it completely dry

No water on the treated area at all. No washing the scalp, no shampoo, no swimming, no steam. Expect mild redness and a slightly raised, sunburn-like feel; the pigment will look noticeably darker and sharper than the final result. That is normal.

Shower below the neckline or wear a shower cap. Pat any incidental moisture away — never rub.

Days 4–7: gentle rinsing only

You may rinse the scalp with cool or lukewarm water only, with no shampoo, no soap and no scrubbing. Pat dry with a clean towel. Light flaking or tiny scabs may appear — leave them entirely alone. Picking one out takes the pigment underneath with it.

The tone will begin to lighten. Do not judge your result yet.

Day 8 onward: back to normal, carefully

You can return to gentle shampooing with a mild, sulphate-free product, and to light exercise. Keep avoiding direct sun on the scalp for a further two to three weeks, and continue moisturising daily once the surface is fully closed.

Full settling takes about 30 days. The healed tone will be softer and lighter than day one — which is exactly why density is built across multiple sessions.

The don'ts — the first 7 days

  • No heavy sweating: no gym, running, hot yoga, sauna or steam room
  • No swimming, pools, hot tubs, ocean or lakes
  • No direct sun on the scalp, and no sunscreen on the treated area yet
  • No shampoo, exfoliants, retinol or any active skincare on the scalp
  • No picking, scratching or peeling flakes
  • No shaving the treated area — wait until the surface is fully closed
  • No hats that sit tightly against the hairline in the first 48 hours

Long-term maintenance

Once healed, SMP needs very little. Sun exposure is the single biggest factor in how quickly it fades: UV breaks pigment down faster than anything else. Use SPF 30 or higher on the scalp whenever you are outdoors, or wear a hat.

Keep the scalp moisturised so the skin surface stays even and the impressions read cleanly. Avoid harsh exfoliating scrubs and high-strength glycolic or retinol products on the treated area.

  • Daily SPF 30+ on exposed scalp, or a hat
  • Moisturise regularly to keep the surface even
  • Use gentle, sulphate-free shampoo
  • Avoid aggressive scalp exfoliation and strong actives
  • Book a refresh before the fade becomes obvious, not after
Quick FAQ

Direct answers

When can I wash my head after SMP?

Keep the treated area completely dry for the first three days. From day four you may rinse with cool or lukewarm water only — no shampoo, soap or scrubbing. From day eight you can return to gentle shampooing with a mild, sulphate-free product.

How often do I need SMP touch-ups?

Most clients book a refresh every three to five years. Because pigment is placed shallowly, it softens gradually rather than disappearing, so a single short session restores depth and tone. Heavy sun exposure, very oily skin and immune response can shorten that interval; consistent SPF use lengthens it.

When can I exercise or go to the gym after SMP?

Avoid heavy sweating for the first seven days after each session. Sweat and heat push pigment out while impressions are still settling. Light activity can resume from day eight; saunas, steam rooms and swimming should wait a full two weeks.

Why does my SMP look darker right after the session?

Fresh impressions always look darker, sharper and slightly raised. As the surface heals over roughly 30 days the tone softens and lightens considerably. Density is deliberately built across two to four sessions for that reason — the final shade is judged on healed skin, never on day one.
