Does SMP Look Real or Fake? An Honest Answer
Properly executed SMP looks real — indistinguishable from shaved stubble at normal conversation distance, and convincing even under magnification. Poorly executed SMP looks obviously fake, and it is usually one of four failures: dots too large, pigment too deep, a hairline edge that is too straight, or uniform density with no gradient.
The technique is not the variable. The hand performing it is.
The four things that make SMP look fake
- Oversized dots — the impression must match real follicle diameter, not exceed it
- Pigment placed too deep — it spreads sideways over months and turns grey-blue
- A drawn, symmetrical hairline edge — real hairlines are broken and irregular
- Flat, uniform density — real hair grows in clusters with varied spacing
What realistic work looks like up close
Under 10x magnification a natural result shows variation: different impression sizes, irregular spacing, a soft and broken frontal edge, and a density gradient that builds from sparse at the front to tighter behind it. That irregularity is deliberate and it is the hardest part of the craft.

How to judge a studio's portfolio
- Ask for healed photos at 6–12 months, not day-one results
- Ask for photos in daylight, not dim studio lighting
- Ask for close-ups of the frontal edge, not just full head shots
- Ask how they build density across sessions and why
Colour matters as much as pattern
SMP pigment must be a carbon-based, stable formulation, diluted to match your natural root tone and skin depth. Standard coloured tattoo inks shift towards blue or green as they break down. That colour shift, more than anything, is what makes old work look artificial.

Will people be able to tell I've had SMP?
At conversation distance, no. People notice you look sharper and often assume you changed your haircut.
Does SMP look fake if I keep longer hair?
No — for density work the pigment sits between existing hairs and is never seen directly, it just removes the scalp show-through.
What if my SMP turns blue?
That is a pigment and depth failure, not an inherent property of SMP. Correctly formulated carbon-based pigment at the correct depth softens in tone without shifting colour.
