Does Wearing Hats Cause Hair Loss?
No — wearing a hat does not cause hair loss. Hair follicles are fed by blood supply from underneath the scalp, not by air from above, so covering your head does not starve or suffocate them.
The reason the myth persists is simple: men who are already thinning wear hats more often, so hats and hair loss appear together.
Why the myth does not hold up
Pattern hair loss is driven by DHT sensitivity in the follicle. Nothing about a cap changes hormone levels or receptor sensitivity. Studies comparing hat wearers and non-wearers find no difference in pattern baldness rates.
What a hat can do is flatten hair, leave an indentation, and make thinning more obvious the moment you take it off — which feels like cause and effect but is not.
The one genuine exception: traction alopecia
Sustained mechanical tension can damage follicles. That is traction alopecia, and it comes from tight braids, tight ponytails, extensions and occasionally from headwear worn extremely tight for many hours a day over years. It shows as thinning along the exact line where the tension sits, not in a Norwood pattern.

Hat hygiene still matters
A dirty, sweat-saturated hat can irritate the scalp and contribute to folliculitis or dandruff, which is uncomfortable and can worsen shedding indirectly. Wash headwear regularly and let your scalp breathe — but keep wearing the hat if you like it.

Not immediately. We ask clients to keep the scalp uncovered and dry for the first few days so the treated skin is not rubbed or trapped in moisture. Your artist will give you an exact day to resume.
Does a hat damage healed SMP?
No. Once healed, pigment sits in the upper dermis and normal headwear has no effect. Sun exposure fades SMP far faster than fabric does.
Can SMP fix traction alopecia?
