The Best Hairline Design for Your Face Shape

The best hairline for you is the one that matches your bone structure and your age, not a template. As a rule: rounder faces are balanced by a slightly higher, more angular line; longer faces by a lower, softer one; square faces by a subtly rounded edge that offsets a strong jaw.
Every hairline we design at VOID SMP in Los Angeles starts from three measurements — forehead height, temple angle and facial width — before any pigment is discussed.
By face shape
Oval
The most flexible shape. Almost any hairline works, so the decision is driven by age-appropriateness and how much forehead you want to show.
Round
A slightly higher line with defined temple corners adds vertical length and structure. A very low, straight line tends to make a round face read wider.
Square
A softly rounded frontal edge balances a strong jaw. Hard corners on a square face can look severe and, in our experience, tend to read as designed rather than grown.
Long / rectangular
A lower, fuller hairline with slightly closed temples shortens the visual length of the face. This is the shape where hairline lowering has the most dramatic effect.
Heart
A softened, slightly wider line balances a narrow chin without adding width at the temples.
Age matters as much as shape
A hairline that suits a 25-year-old rarely suits a 50-year-old. Natural hairlines mature: the temple corners recede, the edge softens, and the line sits slightly higher. Designing an aggressively low, juvenile line on a mature face is one of the fastest ways to make SMP look artificial — and it is a decision that is hard to unwind.
Why the edge must be broken
- Real hairlines are irregular — a drawn line always reads as drawn
- Density should be sparse at the frontal edge and build behind it
- Temple angles are asymmetric on almost everyone, and should stay that way
- Stray, scattered impressions ahead of the main line mimic natural growth

Direct answers
Can I choose exactly where my hairline sits?
You choose within what will look natural for your face and age. We will map two or three viable options and show you each before starting.
Can the hairline be changed later?
It can be built slightly lower or softened in later sessions. Going significantly higher requires laser lightening, which is why we never rush the first design.
Should my hairline be symmetrical?
No. Perfect symmetry looks artificial. We follow your natural asymmetry deliberately.
How do I get a design consultation in LA?
Book a complimentary VOID SMP consultation — it includes a full hairline mapping session at our Wilshire Blvd studio.
