The Ultimate Bald Head Care: How to Prevent Shine and Protect Your SMP from the LA Sun

A great SMP result and a shiny scalp are working against each other. Real shaved hair scatters light; bare skin reflects it. If your scalp is glossy under an office light or an LA afternoon, that reflection flattens the micro-texture your artist spent hours building.
The good news: shine is entirely controllable, and so is pigment longevity. Both come down to a short daily routine. Here is the one we give every VOID SMP client — and why sun protection for the scalp matters more in Los Angeles than almost anywhere else.
Why bald heads shine
Two things create scalp gloss. First, sebum: your scalp has one of the highest densities of oil glands on the body, and without hair to absorb and distribute that oil it pools on the surface. Second, a smooth surface — freshly shaved skin with no texture reflects light like glass.
Overwashing makes both worse. Stripping the scalp with harsh cleanser triggers rebound oil production, so the scalp that squeaked at 8am is glossy by noon.
The anti-shine routine that actually works
1. Wash correctly, not constantly
Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser once daily with lukewarm water and fingertips only. Skip hot water, harsh sulphates and scrubbing — all three provoke oil rebound and irritate treated skin.
2. Exfoliate lightly, once or twice a week
A mild chemical exfoliant such as a low-percentage salicylic acid keeps dead skin and clogged pores from creating patchy texture. Never use a physical scrub over healing SMP, and skip exfoliation entirely for the first two weeks after any session.
3. Moisturise — the counterintuitive step
A dehydrated scalp overproduces oil to compensate. A light, non-comedogenic, matte-finish bald head moisturizer applied once daily keeps skin balanced and, crucially, keeps SMP impressions looking soft and integrated rather than dry and dotty. Avoid anything heavy, greasy, or marketed as "glow".
4. Mattify when it matters
For events, photos or long days under strong lighting, a matte scalp lotion or a translucent mattifying powder pressed on with a soft cloth kills gloss instantly. Blotting papers in a pocket handle the rest.
5. Keep the shave consistent
SMP looks best against a matching stubble length. A regular clipper pass with a fresh guard beats a wet razor for most clients: a razor-smooth scalp is the most reflective surface you can create, and daily blade irritation is not worth it.
Sun protection: the single biggest factor in SMP longevity
UV exposure is what fades scalp pigment. Los Angeles averages sunshine most days of the year, the scalp faces the sky directly, and driving, walking to lunch and standing on a patio all add up long before you consider a beach day.
Carbon-based pigment is far more colour-stable than ink, but no pigment is UV-proof. Clients who apply SPF daily routinely go years longer between refreshes than clients who do not — this is the highest-return habit in scalp care.
- SPF 30 or higher on the exposed scalp every single day, including overcast days
- Choose a matte or dry-touch formulation — many mineral sunscreens double as mattifiers
- Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating
- Wear a hat for extended sun, but do not use hats as a substitute for SPF
- No sunscreen at all on healing skin: wait until your artist clears you, usually around day 14
The first two weeks after a session
- Days 0–4: keep it completely dry. No washing, sweating, swimming, steam rooms or gym. Pat any light weeping with clean tissue and sleep on a fresh pillowcase.
- Days 5–7: first gentle rinse — lukewarm water, fragrance-free cleanser, fingertips only. No scrubbing, no exfoliating, no shaving.
- Days 8–14: light moisturiser once daily, resume light exercise, keep the scalp out of direct sun and away from sunscreen until cleared.
- After day 14: full routine resumes — daily SPF, moisturiser, normal shaving and light weekly exfoliation.
- Throughout: no picking or scratching. Flaking is normal healing and lifting it early takes pigment with it.
What to avoid entirely
- Tanning beds and deliberate scalp tanning — the fastest way to fade a result
- Alcohol-heavy toners and astringents that strip and then trigger oil rebound
- Heavy oils, balms and pomades on the scalp; they read as gloss on camera
- Physical scrubs and exfoliating brushes over pigmented skin
- Chlorinated pools, saunas and hot tubs during the first 14 days
The VOID SMP aftercare kit
Every VOID SMP client leaves with a complete aftercare kit and a written day-by-day protocol, not a verbal summary at the door. The routine above is the one we hand you, matched to your skin type and the area treated.
It is backed by a 12-month touch-up guarantee: complimentary minor refinement within 12 months of your final scheduled session. Aftercare is treated as part of the treatment, not an afterthought — because a result verified under harsh lighting and 10x macro-zoom deserves to be maintained to the same standard.

Direct answers
How do I stop my bald head from shining?
Wash once daily with a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, exfoliate lightly once or twice a week, and use a light matte-finish moisturiser — a dehydrated scalp overproduces oil. For events, a mattifying scalp lotion or translucent powder removes gloss instantly, and blotting papers handle touch-ups.
What is the best moisturizer for a bald head with SMP?
A light, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free lotion with a matte finish, applied once daily. Avoid heavy oils, balms and anything marketed for glow — they add shine and can clog pores over pigmented skin.
Do I really need sunscreen on my scalp every day in LA?
Yes. UV exposure is the primary cause of pigment fading, and in Los Angeles the scalp collects sun during everyday activity, not just at the beach. Daily SPF 30+ is the single biggest factor in how long your SMP lasts between refreshes.
When can I start using sunscreen after an SMP session?
Not on healing skin. Keep the scalp out of direct sun for the first two weeks and wait until your artist clears you — usually around day 14 — before applying sunscreen directly to the treated area.
Should I shave with a razor or clippers after SMP?
Clippers with a fresh guard suit most clients. A razor-smooth scalp is the most reflective surface you can create and daily blade contact irritates the skin, while a consistent short stubble length blends naturally with the pigment.
