Fading & Long-Term Results

Does SMP fade unevenly?

SMP can fade unevenly, but uneven fading is not inevitable. Pigment appearance may vary with skin properties, treatment area, technique, healing, and sun exposure. A lighter-looking region needs assessment rather than an automatic assumption that the entire treatment requires more pigment. The studio's SMP refresh guidance is 4–5 years, not a guaranteed duration or a deadline for treatment. Individual changes should guide follow-up, while sun protection after healing remains an important part of caring for tattooed skin.

What You Should Know

  • Regional differences do not establish a universal fading pattern.
  • Sun-care guidance comes partly from tattoo-general evidence, not a measured SMP fading schedule.
  • A refresh decision should address the actual appearance rather than the calendar alone.

When to Seek Professional Advice

Point out the specific areas that appear lighter and explain when you first noticed the difference. Continue the studio's existing aftercare rather than introducing a new routine to manage perceived fading.
